Big Eye and Bright Reach Shine in Light of Dazor Closure

Dazor, one of the lamp companies we used to proudly carry, went out of business recently. In response to customers seeking a solution, we created a comparison chart to help you choose the best comparable Big Eye or Bright Reach lamp to meet your lighting goals. Big Eye lamps substitute well for magnification needs, and Bright Reach lamps are fantastic substitutes for powerful illumination and glare control needs.

Dazor lamps were magnification lamps crafted in the 1940s, made in America, just like Big Eye lamps! However, both Big Eye and Bright Reach lamps are more affordable than Dazor lamps were. Big Eye and Bright Reach lamps are available in various forms for all uses (desk, clamp, floor).

Team Member Spotlight: Carlos Fuentes

Coming up on his five year anniversary working at Mattingly Low Vision, Carlos Fuentes provides excellent customer service by phone and email, handles order processing, engraves Magnabrite domes, solders different colored LEDs, and helps with our website. He is tech savvy and great with people, a rare and extremely valuable combination. Efficient to the max, Carlos gets the work done quickly and kindly for our customers.

Carlos’s favorite thing about his job is the team he works with. He says, “We’ve got good communication, so we figure everything out really quickly.” He values honesty, integrity, and lightheartedness, all of which make him a strong team member.

For fun, Carlos loves music: playing it (drums, guitar, bass, and piano), writing it, and listening to it. He likes metal, classic rock, and dream pop (relaxing, calming music). He’s even in the middle of writing a musical!

Although most of his family members work in education, he has forged his own path at Mattingly and with his music. His life motto is: “If anything gets you down, don’t let it keep you down.” We’re grateful for all Carlos does for Mattingly Low Vision!

Announcement: The Atwell Award Goes to Dr. Prachi Agrawal

We are pleased to share that this year’s Atwell Award recipient is Dr. Prachi Agrawal, from the Lions Vision Research and Rehabilitation Center at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University. She was chosen by the Low Vision Research Group from a pool of 20 nominees to receive the $1000 award, sponsored by Mattingly Low Vision.

Dr. Agrawal’s research investigates how modern AI-powered hearing aids affect real-world sound localization, a skill critical for safe navigation among individuals with vision loss. Since dual sensory loss affecting both vision and hearing is common in older adults with vision impairment, this work is particularly relevant to the low vision community. Using echologically valid tasks such as locating a ringing phone or identifying car direction, her findings show that broadband amplification consistently improves localization accuracy, while AI-based processing offers more task-specific benefits. Her ongoing work is expanding directly to individuals with low vision and blindness.
